When people hear the term energy balancing, it can sound very vague or overly abstract. In practical terms, however, it often points to something very real: how your nervous system is functioning. Your body is constantly feeling stress, safety, and experience. It stores tension, adapts to overwhelm, and builds patterns based on what you have personally lived through.
Energy balancing, at its most grounded level, is about supporting your system so it can shift from chronic stress patterns and return to regulation – where emotional steadiness, clearer thinking, and physical ease naturally become more available.
Why Energy Balance Matters for Emotional and Physical Well-Being
Energy balance matters because your physical body and your emotional system are distinct, yet constantly influencing one another. When your nervous system has been carrying prolonged stress – whether from work pressure, relationship strain, illness, or years of pushing through – it leaves an imprint in both.
Examples of your physical body holding stress may be tight shoulders that never fully relax, shallow breathing, digestive issues, poor sleep, irritability, or feeling overwhelmed by small things. This is not weakness or bad “coping abilities.” It’s a system that hasn’t had much space to relax.
Supporting energy balance means helping the body shift out of chronic stress activation so emotions feel more manageable and physical tension has a chance to soften. Over time, this builds resilience – not because life gets easier, but because your system isn’t bracing against it.
The Relationship Between Stress and Energy Balance
When I talk about energy imbalance, I am talking about an overstressed nervous system.
Stress is not just emotional – it’s physiological. Every difficult conversation we have, deadline at work or school, health scares, or seasons of uncertainty activate a stress response in our bodies. Heart rate shifts. Muscles tighten. Digestion slows. Hormones change. That response is our body doing what it does to protect us – through survival.
The problem is not stress itself. It is when the body does not fully reset. This happens when we repeatedly experience stress and heightened states of nervousness without enough time for recovery between occurrences. The nervous system will stay slightly activated. Over time, that can look like shallow breathing, poor sleep, bloating, tension, irritability, or feeling both wired and exhausted.
I have personally watched someone live in a near-constant state of fight-or-flight for years – high alert, high output, worrying all the time that she was ingesting toxins from her environment and food, very little true relax in a day and time for any recovery from worrying and living this way. Over time, I watched her system become more reactive and les resilient. She later discovered significant mold exposure and high toxin levels in her body, alongside an immune system that wasn’t functioning optimally. Recently, she was also diagnosed with lymphoma. There is no clear evidence that chronic stress causes mold toxicity or cancer. But we do know that prolonged nervous system activation can affect immune regulation, inflammation, and the body’s ability to repair and detoxify efficiently. At minimum, chronic stress changes the terrain in which everything else is happening.
Energy balance, in practical terms, is nervous system flexibility – the ability to activate when needed and then return to baseline. When that flexibility is restored, the body functions more efficiently, and emotional regulation becomes easier.
Signs Your Energy May Be Out of Balance
Some signs include:
- Feeling constantly “on edge” or easily triggered
- Trouble sleeping or waking between 2-4 a.m.
- Digestive issues that come and go without a clear cause
- Increased sensitivity to foods, environments, or chemicals
- Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
- Frequent colds, slow recovery from illness, or lowered immunity
- Muscle tension that never fully releases
- Feeling wired but exhausted
- Emotional reactivity that feels out of proportion
- A sense that your body isn’t bouncing back the way it used to
For example, the person I have watched living in a near constant state of fight for flight for years that I spoke of above, from my observation, was experiencing many of these signs over the years – high stress, minimal recovery time between episodes, pushing through exhaustion, sleeping lightly, dealing with ongoing digestive issues and sensitivities. Her body just would never fully recover and bounce back to regulation. Over time, her resilience appeared to decrease. Again, we cannot prove scientifically that stress caused what followed, but when the nervous system stays activated long term, the immune system and detox pathways can become less efficient.
What an Energy Balancing Session Is Like
I will use an example from my own method of Energy Healing here to explain what happens in a session. I am certified in and use what is called the TOLPAKAN™ Energy Healing Method, founded and created by Dr. Karen Kan, retired medical doctor and now a doctor of Light Medicine.
At the beginning of a session, I talk with my clients. We clarify what’s happening now in their life, what feels stuck, what symptoms are present, and where the client wants to be in his or her journey instead of where he or she is, and what it will take to reach that healing goal/goals. I take detailed notes so we are working intentionally not vaguely.
From there, we shift into a guided present-state practice called Stillness Through Observing Internal Movement (STOIM™), a method created by Dr. Karen Kan, herself. This is a body-based awareness process where the client breathes, settles, and begins noticing subtle shifts or internal sensations of any sort without trying to change them. The goal is nervous system regulation and internal clarity – not forcing outcomes.
Once the client is in that regulated state, I say a brief prayer to invite alignment with Divine Source and the highest good. I then use Diving Muscle Testing™ (also developed by Dr. Karen Kan) to assess what may be contributing to the client’s symptoms – whether physical, emotional, stress-related, or belief-based. This process helps guide where we focus in the session.
Once the areas are identified, I use structured TOLPAKAN™ healing directives to direct focused intention toward restoring balance. The client’s role is simple: remain relaxed, breathe, and allow their nervous system to receive.
After sessions, most clients report feeling noticeable internal movement, shifts, warmth, calm, or a sense of release. I document what we covered and send session notes so they have clarity about what was addressed.
The work is quiet, focused, and grounded in supporting the body’s ability to regulate and restore.
Practitioner Presence and Attunement
An often overlooked but very important part of energy healing is practitioner presence.
Before any technique or healing directive, I prioritize being grounded, present, and steady so the client’s nervous system has something stable to align with. Our systems sort of co-regulate.
When one person is calm and attuned, it becomes easier for the other to soften.
Attunement means listening to/feeling the energy – noticing shifts in breathing, tone, pacing, etc. It’s subtle but very important. A regulated practitioner creates a safer environment for the body to unwind.
Balance happens through safety, not force.

Immediate vs Gradual Shifts
Some people feel changes right away from energy sessions – deeper breathing, warmth, emotional release, or noticeable sense of calm, physical body relax, before the session ends.
For others, the shifts unfold gradually over time after a session (days, weeks, or even months). They may experience better sleep quality, steadier reactions, improved digestion, or a quieter mind over the following days, weeks, months. Both are fine. The nervous system integrates at its own pace, and lasting balance is often subtle before it’s dramatic.
Here is an article on possible shifts after an energy session and how to ground, integrate, process, and what you can expect after a session.
Energy Balancing Is About Nervous System Capacity
Energy balance isn’t about perfection or chasing a feeling. It’s about supporting your nervous system so your body can function the way it was designed to.
When stress is processed instead of stored, regulation becomes easier. Resilience improves. Symptoms often soften. Not because something mystical happened — but because the system has more room to repair, adapt, and recover.
If you have been living in a state of constant activation, pushing through exhaustion, or feeling like your body never fully resets, energy balancing may simply be about giving your nervous system room to regulate again.
That is where this work begins.
