Why Your Body Feels Tense and How Fascia, Lymphatic Flow, and the Nervous System Connect

Tension, stiffness, heaviness, and puffiness can invite us to look more closely at what the body is experiencing. Explore the connection between fascia, lymphatic flow, and the nervous system.

If your body has been feeling tense, stiff, heavy, puffy, uncomfortable, or simply unable to fully relax, you may find yourself wondering why. There are many possible reasons the body may feel this way, and these sensations don’t necessarily point to one specific cause. But looking at the fascia, lymphatic system, and nervous system can offer a helpful perspective because these systems each have their own important role while also existing within the same interconnected body.

The fascia provides a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs; the lymphatic system, a major detox system in the body, just underneath the skin, helps move lymph and maintain fluid balance; and the nervous system continually receives and responds to information from both within and around the body. Together, these systems are part of the larger environment in which we experience movement, sensation, tension, relaxation, and body awareness.

Why Your Body May Feel Tight, Heavy, Puffy, or Unsettled

The body can feel tight, heavy, puffy, or unsettled for many different reasons.  Physical activity, posture, sleep, hydration, everyday demands, emotions, energy around us that we absorb from our environment, changes in routine, and many other factors can influence how we experience our bodies.  Sometimes there may not be one obvious explanation at all.  These sensations are not necessarily a sign that something is wrong with the fascia, lymphatic system, or nervous system, but they can be an invitation to become more aware of what your body is experiencing and trying to communicate to you.

Our bodies are constantly adjusting to both internal and external signals.  The nervous system takes in information about our surroundings and our internal state, while the fascia provides support and allows tissues to move and glide in relationship with one another. The lymphatic system is also continuously moving fluid through the body as part of its normal role in fluid balance and immune function.  These systems have different jobs, but they exist within the same living environment and influence the way we experience movement, sensation, comfort, and ease in the body on all levels.  Looking at them together can help develop a more complete understanding of the body’s experience without assuming that every symptom has a single explanation.

Want to explore the science behind these interconnected systems?  Research continues to examine the relationship between fascia, the nervous system, blood vessels, and lymphatic structures, giving us a growing understanding of how these systems exist within the body.

Fascia Contains Nerves and Sensory Receptors

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why does my body feel tight and stiff?” or “Why can’t my body relax?”, the way your body senses and responds to internal and external signals may be part of the bigger picture. Fascia is a connective-tissue network that surrounds and supports muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and other structures. It also contains sensory nerve endings and receptors that help us sense pressure, movement, stretch, and changes within the tissues.

The nervous system plays an important role in muscle tension and how the body responds to stress and ongoing demands. Some people may experience greater tension, stiffness, heaviness, puffiness, or difficulty relaxing during periods of increased stress or nervous-system activation. The lymphatic system has its own role in moving lymphatic fluid and supporting fluid balance, while research continues to explore how these systems interact within the body.

In my work with clients, I’ve seen how quickly someone’s experience of their body can sometimes shift during an energy-healing session/sessions. One client I work with experiences periods of pain, discomfort, tightness, and a sensation of restricted breathing in the diaphragm area. When we connect energetically, assess her symptoms, and ask quality questions through Divine Muscle Testing™, focusing specifically on the nerves, blood vessels, lymphatic flow, fascia flow and fluid, and sensory receptors in that area, and how happy all of this is, she has at times experienced an immediate shift in those sensations, including a noticeable change in tightness, discomfort, and her sense of ease with breathing once we have become aware of the underlying causes.

I don’t interpret this as proof of a specific physical imbalance, but it has deepened my curiosity about the relationship between sensory signaling, fascia, the nervous system, and the way our bodies experience symptoms.

Shallow or Restricted-Feeling Breathing

A restricted or compressed feeling through the chest, ribs, or surrounding tissues can feel unsettling. Tightness, muscle tension, changes in fascia or tissue mobility, fluid and lymphatic flow, sensory receptors, and nervous-system activity can all be contributing factors to this restriction. These sensations don’t necessarily mean something is blocked, however.

In my work, I sometimes use the simple language of “unhappy” nerves, sensory receptors, fascia, or lymphatic flow to describe an area that doesn’t seem to be experiencing ease or balance. I see this in my work with a client who experiences tightness, discomfort, and a restricted feeling around her chest and ribcage area.

During our energy healing sessions, focusing on these “unhappy” areas has sometimes resulted in an immediate shift in her experience of tightness and restricted breathing. For her, the change can feel very noticeable in the moment, while I remain curious about the many factors that may contribute to what her body is experiencing.

Why Resting Does Not Always Help Your Body Relax

It is a common assumption that rest alone should resolve tightness, muscle tension, or a persistent feeling of discomfort in the body. However, many people notice that even after sleeping, lying down, or taking time off, tension or restricted breathing can remain.

This is because rest is not only about physical stillness. The body is also influenced by the nervous system, sensory receptors, fascia flexibility, fluid movement, and lymphatic flow. Just to add a little more knowledge and understanding of these systems and how they work, lymphatic vessels travel through fascial tissue. If these systems remain in a heightened state of physiological arousal or ongoing stress response, the body may not fully shift into a relaxed state, even during rest.

For example, chronic stress, emotional load, negative mental thought processes/patterns/beliefs can keep the nervous system subtly activated, influencing muscle tension, tissue mobility, and even pain perception. In these cases, the body may be resting physically but not fully downshifting internally.

I often see this in clients who feel tired but still tense, or who wake up with the same tightness they went to bed with. This is not necessarily a lack of rest, but rather a sign that underlying patterns in the nervous system, fascia, or sensory processing have not yet shifted.

This is where body awareness becomes important. When we begin to notice how the body is responding – not just whether we are resting, but how settled we are – we can better understand why certain sensations persist. From there, approaches such as gentle movement, breath awareness, or energy-based work may help the body gradually return to a more balanced state.

The Difference Between Temporary Stress and Persistent Tension

It is important to distinguish between temporary stress responses and persistent bodily tension, because they are not the same thing, even though they can feel similar in the moment.

Temporary stress is a natural and healthy reaction.  When the body encounters a challenge – whether physical, emotional, or environmental – the nervous system activates a short-term stress response.  This can increase physiological arousal, raise muscle readiness, and temporarily heighten sensory receptors and alertness.  In this state, you might notice tight shoulders, shallow breathing, or a sense of being “on edge,” but these sensations usually resolve once the situation passes.

If you’re curious to learn more about how body awareness supports regulation from outside stressors and persistent tension, read my blog post here on the mind-body connection and how your body stores emotions in the body.

Persistent tension is different, however.  This is when the body does not fully return to its baseline state after the stressor is gone.  Instead, the nervous system remains partially activated, and the body continues to hold patterns of muscle tension, altered fascia tone, and reduced tissue mobility.  Over time, this can influence blood vessels, lymphatic flow, and even how the body processes pain perception.

This is often when people begin to wonder, “Why does my body feel tense all the time?” Rather than assuming there is one cause, it can be helpful to look at the body as an interconnected system and consider what may be supporting its ability to move between activation, rest, and recovery.

How the Fascia-Lymph Harmony Reset Session May Support You: My Fascia Lymph Harmony Reset Session

The Fascia Lymph Harmony Reset Session is a uniquely designed offering I created through my work with clients and my exploration of the interconnected relationship between fascia, lymphatic flow, and the nervous system. The session was inspired by working with a client who experiences recurring physical discomfort and sensations that seem connected to these areas of the body, and through our work together, I saw how supportive energy healing could be in helping her experience greater ease, awareness, and flowing connections within the systems of her body.  Her experience inspired me to develop this framework intentionally as a complementary, non-medical approach to whole-body harmony.

During a Fascia-Lymph Harmony Reset Session using the TOLPAKAN™ Energy Healing Method, I connect with the Divine Source that is within us all along with the energetic field of the client through STOIM™ (Stillness Through Observing Internal Movement). I then begin using Divine Muscle Testing™ within my energetic framework to explore areas where a client is experiencing physical symptoms such as tension, tightness, stiffness, discomfort, or a feeling of being “wound up.”  I may explore perceived happiness, flexibility, and movement of the fascia in those areas and ask whether there is energetic support available around the fascia and lymphatic flow.

From there, I explore the lymphatic system and its energetic flow in the body, asking questions about specific areas of the body as well as the system as a whole.  I use Divine Muscle Testing™ to ask yes or no questions about underlying root issues/causes of imbalance that are available for clearing energetically.  I then assess the relationship “happiness” (what TOLPAKAN™ Healing describes as harmony and balance) between the connection and communication between the fascia and lymphatic system.

Next, I explore the nervous system’s energetic connection and happiness to the fascia and lymphatic system.  I look at themes of flow, release, restoration, for each individual system and the relationships between all three of them. I also explore the overall integration and harmony among the fascia, lymphatic flow, and nervous system, particularly in the areas where the person is experiencing symptoms.

One part of my process is asking, “What is the least happy connection among these systems?  Through muscle testing, I explore what may be contributing to energetic disharmony and then use TOLPAKAN™ Healing Directives to focus the healing on the things identified, such as, physical toxins, inflammation, or immune system issues, emotions that are trapped in the body, energetic toxins from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, scalar energies, mental thought patterns or beliefs absorbed or inherited from one’s lineage, spiritual vows, curses, or oaths passed down through generations, etc. The intention is to support greater flow, connection, and whole-body harmony.

Tara’s Energetic Perspective on Whole-Body Harmony

From an energetic perspective, the body is more than a collection of separate systems.  The fascia, lymphatic, and nervous system each have their own roles, yet they exist within one interconnected body constantly communicating with one another.

Whole body harmony does not mean every symptom has one explanation.  It means creating space to listen to the body, notice areas of tension or disharmony, and support greater flow, connection, rest, and restoration.

This is at the heart of my TOLPAKAN™ Energy Healing and Fascia-Lymph Harmony Reset Session – supporting greater awareness and connection between the physical, emotional, mental, dimensional, and energetic aspects of the whole person.
